Ernabella Ceramics – recent works

Curated by Greg Mallyon

The remote South Australian community of Ernabella celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2008. Located 440 Kms south west of Alice Springs it has developed an international reputation for its high quality crafts. Ceramics, batik, weaving and printmaking are among the art forms exhibited by Ernabella artists.
International collections including the British Museum, London, Edinburgh City Gallery, The Museum of Natural History, Lyon and The Ethnographic Museum. Osaka have acquired works from this unique art centre.

In 2003 a ceramic studio was established in the community with local men and women being trained in various aspects of ceramic production. Workshops in batik (lost wax) decoration, already employed successfully in fabric design were extended to ceramics. As a result large scale urns and platters, small vases and other sculptural forms have been regularly exhibited throughout Australia and overseas. The success story of ceramic production continues in 2009 with emerging and established artists building on the developments of the past.

Artists frequently depict Dreamtime legends or decorate ceramics with images of bush tucker. Birrung Gallery is delighted to present an exhibition of recent developments in the production of Ernabella ceramics.
