Contemporary Australian Artists in Ceramics

The noted Australian Ceramicist Lino Alvarez, whose studio is located in the artistically renowned and historical gold-mining township of Hill End, approached Australian Galleries to hold an exhibition of ceramics during the 2009 Australian Ceramics Triennale, involving some of Australia’s leading artists, several having not worked with ceramics before. This is not the case with artist Garry Shead, who has a background of working his artistic abilities with quite radical experimentation of both shape and method, resulting in large irregular urns combined with Shead’s paintings. The success of these ceramics was the trigger to inviting six other artists to be involved. Each artist will spend at least 10 days at Alvarez’s Hill End studio. The works will range from unique shapes through to the use of painted and fired ceramic tiles.

From the Oxford St bus stop near Darlinghurst Rd: walk down Oxford St on the left hand side for about 800 metres. You will see Victoria Barracks on the opposite side of the road. At Shadforth St turn left, and walk to Gipps St, cross it and keep walking on Shadforth St to Walker Lane, where you turn right. Hogarth Gallery will be on the right. Walk past it to the end of Walker Lane, turn left into Brown St. Walk along and turn left into Mary Place.  No 12 is on the left a few doors along.
