DECADE: the Sidney Myer Fund International Ceramics Award, 1997 - 2008

The Sidney Myer Fund International Ceramics Award was established by Shepparton Art Gallery in 1997 to provide an unprecedented opportunity for a major international ceramic award and exhibition in Australia. It is selected, curated and adjudicated by a single international judge, rather than a selection panel.

Acquisitions from the award have enabled the gallery to develop a strong and comprehensive survey collection of international practice and trends. The gallery has collected 114 artworks from the Award, representing Asia, Australasia, Europe, Middle East, North America, and Scandinavia.

This exhibition will survey the winners and highlights of a decade of contemporary ceramics collecting, demonstrating a broad and inclusive mix of sculptural, functional and form-based artworks.

The Shepparton Art Gallery is located across two floors of exhibition space in the Eastbank Centre, 70 Welsford Street, Shepparton.

On the ground floor the gallery has a permanent exhibition of Australian ceramics, which includes work from the first commercial potteries, the development of studio pottery, and showcases contemporary ceramic design and sculpture. On the upper floor the gallery presents its permanent collection of Australian painting and works on paper.

There are also two dedicated temporary exhibition spaces, one which presents a program of exhibitions that derive from the communities and artists of Greater Shepparton, the other which presents touring exhibitions, bringing a diverse range of Australian and International art to the region.

A significant aspect of the gallery’s work is the biennale Sidney Myer Fund International Ceramics Award and the national Indigenous Ceramic Art Award.
