Emerging Artists EXHIBITION -  emerging artists/students attending the Triennale are offered and encouraged to take part in 'Drop In', an exhibition to be held at the National Art School for the duration of the conference. Emerging artists/students at the conference are invited to bring one piece of work with them to be dropped in at the NAS on the afternoon of Thursday 16th or the morning of Friday 17th July. The work must be clearly labeled with the artists name, title of work and contact details whilst in Sydney. The work can be for sale, but it is the responsibility of the artist to make contact with the buyer and deal with money themselves. Makers, teachers, gallery owners, magazine editors and collectors will be attending the Triennale in large numbers. This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase your work and be involved in a display of contemporary work from new makers across the country. We look forward to your participation.

THE GREAT NATIONAL COFFEE MUG COMPETITION

As a mark of respect to the late alan Peascod, Janet Mansfield is hosting the Great National Coffee Mug Competition in conjunction with the Australian Ceramics Triennale. Artists and Potters are asked to bring a set of six coffee mugs that best reflect our contemporary way of life for judging by the delegates of the conference. Prize money of $2,000 will be awarded to the winner and all works should be for sale. Click here to download entry forms.

The Great National Coffee Mug Competition

- Revisited -

Deborah Halpern. Victoria. 1981. Earthenware. Opaque white glaze with

over-glaze decoration. The Great National Mug Competition.

Pottery in Australia. Nov/Dec. 1981. Vol 20/2. Collection: Janet Mansfield.

In 1981, at the 2nd National Australian Ceramic Conference, 800 entries were received for the Great National Coffee Mug Competition. The 650 delegates voted, in a secret ballot, for the set they liked the most. Jeff Mincham was the winner. Some of the sets of six were functional in a traditional way, some, like the Deborah Halpern set, shown above, offered a sculptural solution.  Many sets offered beauty, some were confrontational, and all drew comment and discussion.

For the Australian Ceramics Triennale ‘09, Sydney, the magazine Ceramics Art and Perception, established by Janet Mansfield, and with thanks to the support of the Australian ceramics community, will offer delegates to the conference a chance to revisit this event and bring a set of six coffee mugs with the chance to win $2000 for the set voted on by delegates as the most appropriate for contemporary life. The award is non-acquisitive but all sets should be for sale.

Janet is offering this project award as a mark of respect to the late Alan Peascod, whose practical and intelligent approach to ceramic art inspired many thoughtful, innovative and forward-thinking ideas to the ceramic field world-wide.

RENEGADE CLAY - ephemeral clay performances by six ceramic artists in six key positions across Sydney's CBD.

Bruce McWhinney, director of Renegade Clay, wishes to acknowledge the help and support of Karen Weiss, the committee of the Australian Ceramics Triennale and the artists, students, helpers and film makers, for making this exciting project possible.

A 60 minute DVD of Renegade Clay is in production, and a summary DVD will be shown on Monday July 20 at NAS at the conclusion of the Triennale.

Renegade Clay is a world first project and a special satellite event of the Triennale. Renegade Clay is a series of six site specific Public Art events that will engage,

delight and fascinate the general public with two-hour acts of EMPHERAL CLAY PERFORMANCES and INSTALLATIONS in Sydney's CBD during weekday lunch hours. This is a celebration of the arts and in particular ceramic arts, taking our artists and their work to the streets, becoming part of the everyday life of Sydneysiders and it's visitors.

Ceramics in the Asian Collection of the Art Gallery of New South Wales with Head Curator of Asian Art Jackie Menzies
Thursday 16 July 2-3pm

The Art Gallery of New South Wales has an extensive permanent display of Asian ceramics: in the lower East Asian gallery are to be seen Chinese Han to Tang dynasty earthenware tomb figures (mingqi), Ming imperial porcelains, objects for a scholar's desk, and stunning individual pieces, such as a large porcelain fish bowl. A smaller display of Korean ceramics includes Koryo celadons and an impressive piece by contemporary master Yoon Kwang-cho. Japanese ceramics include tea wares, plus a special display of contemporary works.
Ceramics are also in the upper Asian gallery: a long wall of export ceramics, organised according to their find spots in Asia: Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, and Vietnam. Displays also include Asian ceramics made for their own local markets. The displays provide a wealth of ceramic types across countries and centuries!
